The parts of South Africa in which we operate have been severely hit by HIV and AIDS, with as much as 50% of the community diagnosed as HIV positive. One of the resulting factors is that many parents have passed away, leaving children to bring up their younger brothers and sisters. Trying their best to keep themselves and their siblings alive means that these children rarely have the time or the money to go to school. And they rarely have the energy due to extreme hunger and malnourishment. Our Support a Family project asks donors to make monthly donations to a child-headed family to help pay for basic food packages and shoes and uniforms for all school age children. This project is coming to an end as our family’s become self-sufficient. We have two families left in Ingwavuma who are fast approaching self-sufficiency.
